Pink Trope
Chant your portion, scored on words and melody. Private.
Pink Trope helps you prepare your Torah or Haftarah reading. Pick your portion, hear the tune its cantillation marks call for, then chant it out loud. Pink Trope listens on your iPhone and scores your words and your melody separately, so you know which words to go over and where the tune drifted.
How it works
- Open Pink Trope and tap Pick a portion. Choose Weekly portion for any of the 54 weekly portions, Torah or Haftarah, or Any passage to set a book, chapter and verses from anywhere in the Tanakh. The weekly list uses the Ashkenazi Haftarah for each portion; use Any passage for a different one.
- Under Hear it first, tap Play the trope to hear the opening of your passage played as a simple melody built from its marks. Tap Marks to see every cantillation mark by name, hear its motif, and switch between the Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions.
- Tap Chant it, then Start chanting, and chant from the Hebrew text on screen, shown with its vowels and marks. Tap Done when you finish.
- Pink Trope scores your words and your melody separately. Each word is marked Read, Unclear or Missed, and words where the tune drifted are underlined. Sing in whatever key suits your voice: the shape of the tune is what is graded. If Hebrew speech recognition is not available on your iPhone, the melody is still scored.
- Tap Save attempt to keep the result. Home shows Your best so far, and the archive, the clock button at the top right, lists every attempt you saved.
- Add the Pink Trope widget to your Lock Screen or Home Screen for a standing reminder that reads Chant today's portion.
Traditions vary by community, by congregation and by teacher, and each tradition in Pink Trope is one table of melodies, used for Torah and Haftarah alike. Always confirm your portion and your melody with your own teacher: if your teacher sings a mark differently, your teacher is right. The Hebrew text is the Westminster Leningrad Codex, and every source is named in Settings under Text, melodies and credits.
What stays on your device
- No accounts, no email, no signup.
- No analytics, no third-party SDKs.
- Pink Trope asks for the microphone and speech recognition the first time you tap Start chanting, and listens only while you chant, to check your words and your notes.
- Your words are checked by speech recognition on your iPhone, and your voice is never sent anywhere. Each recording is deleted as soon as it has been scored.
- Saved attempts, meaning your scores and word-by-word results, stay on your iPhone. Swipe left on one in the archive to delete it.
- If Apple's Hebrew speech model is not on your iPhone yet, it is downloaded from Apple the first time your words are checked. Apart from that, the only network call is to Apple's StoreKit for purchases.
